Nexuses between Areas of the Surface Membrane of the Same Arterial Smooth Muscle Cell
نویسنده
چکیده
Specialized areas of close apposition (nexuses) are found between the smooth muscle cells of various organs (Dewey and Barr, 1962, 1964), including blood vessels (Cliff, 1967 ; Verity and Bevan, 1968; Devine and Simpson, 1968) . The nexus may appear as either a tight junction, with apparent membrane fusion, or a gap junction, possibly depending on the method of fixation (Brightman and Reese, 1969 ; and compare Cobb and Bennett, 1969 a with Uehara and Burnstock, 1970). These structures may be important in the conduction of electrical events which is known to occur between smooth muscle cells of various organs (Bozler, 1938 ; Tomita, 1967 ; Barr et al ., 1968; Abe and Tomita, 1968) . In addition, conduction between arterial smooth muscle cells is suggested by the successful use of the sucrose-gap method to record from this tissue (Keatinge and Richardson, 1963 ; Keatinge, 1964) . In the present work, intercellular junctions in arterial smooth muscle have been examined . Junctions between areas of the surface membrane from the same cell are also described and some implications of this finding are discussed .

Nexuses between the smooth muscle cells of the guinea-pig ileum
The circular musculature of the guinea-pig ileum has been studied by freeze-fracture to analyze quantitatively the gap junctions (nexuses) between its smooth muscle cells. The average cell surface area and cell volume are 5,074 micron 2 and 3,260 micron 3. The packing density of nexuses is 48/1,000 micron 2 of cell surface or approximately 244/muscle cell. Nexuses range in area from less than 0...
متن کاملA Study of Nexuses in Visceral Smooth Muscle
Nexuses are described between the smooth muscle cells of the gizzard of the chick and the pigeon, the vas deferens of the mouse and the guinea pig, and the taenia coli of the guinea pig. The nexuses in the gizzard were examined after osmium tetroxide and potassium permanganate had been used as fixatives. Although differences in the dimensions of the unit membranes and the nexuses were noted, th...
متن کاملNexus Junctions between Dividing and Interphase Granulosa Cells of the Rat Ovary
A type of intercellular junction known as the nexus or "gap" junction is found in many tissues where the outer leaflets of adjacent plasma membranes are in contact (15, 24) . These areas of membrane specialization are thought to provide a limited form of cytoplasmic continuity by providing pathways for passage of ions and small molecules between the interiors of apposed cells (4, 13). Low resis...
متن کاملA Study of the Structure and Distribution of the Nexus
Nexuses, that is, fusions of plasma membranes of adjacent cells, are described in mammalian smooth and cardiac muscle, median giant axon of earthworm, frog skin, and rat submandibular gland. In smooth muscle they usually occur where a process from one cell either meets a process of, or projects into a neighboring cell. On the other hand, in mammalian heart muscle and in earthworm giant axon the...
متن کاملElectrical Transmission at the Nexus between Smooth Muscle Cells
The hypothesis that nexuses between cells are responsible for the core conductor properties of tissues was tested using smooth muscle preparations from the taenia coli of guinea pigs. Action potentials recorded from small diameter preparations across a sucrose gap change from monophasic to diphasic when a shunt resistor is connected across the gap. This indicates that transmission between smoot...
